ICAO 9303, LDS and BAC

One of the important characteristics of NXP Contactless SmarteID is its support for ICAO 9303 file-system types.

The documented SmarteID variants provide:

LDS + BAC + BAC+

where the product documentation identifies:

  • LDS — Logical Data Structure
  • BAC — Basic Access Control
  • BAC+ — enhanced file-system functionality

This makes the technology particularly relevant to electronic identity and travel-document-style applications, rather than simply being a conventional memory RFID card.

Contactless Communication

SmarteID uses a 13.56 MHz ISO/IEC 14443 Type A RF interface.

The documented variants support:

106 → 212 → 424 kbit/s

while the SmarteID 24K and 32K variants are documented with support up to 848 kbit/s. The specified operating distance is approximately 10 cm, depending on the card antenna and operating environment.

Security Features

The SmarteID family includes several security-related hardware features:

  • 7-byte unique serial number
  • DES3 cryptographic engine
  • DES3 processing below 40 ms
  • Voltage monitoring
  • Frequency monitoring
  • Temperature monitoring
  • Light detection
  • Controlled contactless communication
  • ICAO 9303-oriented LDS/BAC architecture
  • BAC+ enhanced file-system support
