What Are Contactless/RFID Smart Cards?

Contactless/RFID Smart Cards are plastic or other card-format credentials that contain an embedded RFID/NFC integrated circuit (IC) and antenna. Unlike traditional contact smart cards, they communicate with a compatible reader wirelessly, without requiring physical electrical contact.

How Contactless/RFID Smart Cards Work

A typical card contains:
RFID/NFC IC – Stores data and performs authentication, cryptographic operations, or application processing.
Antenna – Enables wireless communication and, for many passive cards, receives operating power from the reader’s RF field.
Card substrate – Usually PVC, PET, PET-G, polycarbonate, or another suitable material.
Personalization layer – Can include printed information, encoded identifiers, photographs, certificates, or application data.
When the card is brought near a compatible reader, the reader generates an RF field. The card’s antenna couples with this field, allowing the IC and reader to exchange data without physical contact.
